Some users of the Freestyle Libre 3 glucose sensor, a product by Abbott, are currently experiencing delays in getting their prescriptions filled. The delays are primarily due to a significantly high demand for the Libre 3 sensors, according to Abbott spokesperson Lindsy Delco. She explained that the company is actively enhancing production capacities to meet this demand. Efforts include expanding an existing manufacturing facility within the month and planning to open a new facility later in the year.

Robbie Marcus, an analyst at J.P. Morgan, indicated in his research note that these fulfillment issues appear to be short-lived. He attributed the delays to a combination of some supply chain constraints and notably strong consumer demand, highlighting that Abbott is continuing to capture a larger share of the U.S. market. Marcus’s insights are based on his discussions with Abbott’s management and observations of current retail distributions.

Delco suggested that if customers find the Libre 3 sensors unavailable at pharmacies or through mail order services, they should check back in a few days for restocked supplies. For those facing prolonged waiting periods, she recommended discussing with healthcare providers the possibility of switching to the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus. This newer version, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration last year, offers a slightly extended wear time of 15 days compared to the 14 days for the Libre 3, and it is reported to have better availability in both pharmacies and mail-order platforms. Delco’s advice underscores Abbott’s efforts to ensure that users have access to necessary medical supplies despite current constraints.
