Ralston pointed out two primary challenges the FDA commonly encounters when reviewing AI applications in healthcare. First, there’s the issue of performance drift. While most datasets currently used are retrospective and hence imperfect, Ralston argued for the necessity of transforming these datasets into more comprehensive compilations sufficient for both training and testing the AI models effectively. He highlighted the concern that data often fails to capture the diversity needed for these models to be universally applicable, emphasizing the importance of including diverse demographic and systemic variables in the data used.

Moreover, Ralston also touched upon the importance of considering the sources of data acquisition, such as different hospital systems and the technologies they use. Variable workflows among hospitals could affect the data’s representativeness and relevance to intended patient populations and device applications.
